Your Best Guestimate - Day 10

It wasn’t easy traveling and having to figure out calories this weekend. Actually, it was near impossible. My husband and best friend have embarked on this healthy lifestyle change with me. All weekend our conversation sounded like this:

“How many calories do you think are in one bratwurst?” We didn’t know, and we will never know.

“How many calories do you think are in one piece of sushi and one mini crab cake?” Damn weddings and the associated foods of usual portions.

"How many calories are in an Irish Car Bomb?" Not a political statement, but a drink shot containing a variety of alcohols. Identities have been concealed to protect the innocent. My guestimate: too many calories.

Lots of Weird Weight Loss Tips for Traveling

  • Bring an apple (I got this from H3 friend Jeff) .
  • Order a side salad and appetizer with protein for your meal.
  • Eat half of hotel omelet, but regular serving of fruit.
  • Ask your friends or co-workers for help. Just verbalizing “Which do you think is better?” might help you make a better food choice. Even if you already know which item on the menu is a better choice.
  • Walk when you can. Skip the cab or rental car. Unless you are wearing 4-inch heels to the wedding. You then have permission to take a cab.
  • When tempted by the Doritos at the pre-wedding picnic, get up and play a game of Corn Hole. I am not okay with the name of this game, but it is fun. I was tempted by the Doritos and avoided Doritos with a game of Corn Hole.
  • Do better than you normally would. Even if you don’t make the best choice every time. Make better choices. This is great advice I heard from Bob Wright at Hilton Head Health. Bob is the Director of Education.
  • Get back to your structured eating and exercising plan when you get home.
  • Congratulate yourself for focusing on your goals even when you are away from home.

  1. How many calories in that hotel omlette?

Mmmmm Eggs, seems you enjoy them too as I see 3 or 4 mentions of them already.

    Here's something to consider:

    72 - Whole Egg (45 fat, 71% RDA Cholesterol)
    17 - Egg White ( 0 fat, 0% cholesterol)

If you do not like plain egg whites, try mixing 1/2 or 2/3 ratio.

Consider a 3 egg omlette with 2 whites and 1 whole egg is more than 100 calories lighter and 66% less fat.

If someone in your house uses mayo, then save the yolks to make fresh mayo.

I see egg white options more and more on menus. At full-service hotels, you can often request them even if eating on a breakfast buffet.

  2. Hey Jeff, how are you!? That's great info and advice! Never occurred to me that you could ask for modifications at a buffet.

Nicki, I did the real boot camp today with 1/4 mile sprints in between the sets. And I actually managed to do all push ups (modified of course) with ease this time. I may actually move up to one set of real push ups. Yeah, baby!

  3. Jeff, you think I'm kidding, but I need you to host the cooking portion of this blog. Not stole recipes either. Real world application like you provided above. I have a delicious low fat/fat free quiche I've been making for years. I love eggs. They are my favorite. Ate them every day of my life until college at which time I replace eggs with ramen noodles. Gross but true. I like whites, yokes, combo of the two. Love them poached, but I don't do that at home. Keep the suggestions coming. You are going to be my food life line.

  4. MC, how did the salmon turn out last night? I dream of being able to do more than 2 real push-ups. BOOT CAMP!! Did you get tickets? Did you get tickets? I'm very proud. I think I have a yoga date tonight. You are challenging me to do the modified boot camp before work tomorrow...

  6. Those babes are pretty hot!

I forgot to set the timer and overcooked the salmon. You know, that white stuff came out. But the kids ate it all, so I take that as a sign that it was good enough. My in-laws quietly ate theirs and did not ask for seconds. Oh well, can't please them all! LOL!

The dijonnaise sauce goes really, really well with the potato and green bean salad. A little too well.... But you already knew that!

  7. Will certainly send the food tips or even post if you want ... I like to cook.

Tonight for dinner I had the following ... don't have a good name for it, so I will just list the ingredients. The inspiration came from fajita's, pizza, and taco's that have cabbage in them.

    Green/Yellow/Red Pepper Chopped
    Onion Chopped
    Jalapeno Sliced
    Savoy Cabbage Shredded
    Garlic Crushed
    Tomato's Diced
    Salt/Pepper/Garlic Powder/Paprika/Oregano to taste
    Extra-Firm Tofo Cubed
    Cheddar Cheese
    Flatout Multigrain Wrap
    Green Pea Guacamole (H3 Recipe)

    Veggies:
All of the veggies expect the tomatos were sweated/steamed in a pan with a lid. At the end, I added some water and increased the heat to get some char. As the veggies became tender, I added about 2 tsp of olive oil for flavor.

    Tofu:
Lightly oil (spray) baking sheet, in oven at 350-400 for 10-15 minutes.

    Wrap:
Put in oven for 5-10 minutes until crisp.

    Assembly:
Cut wrap into 1/4s. Spread 1 tsp of pea/guacamole on wrap. Add ~1/4 veggies. Top with 2-3 bits of Tofu, a few shreds of extra-sharp cheddar, and fresh tomatos.

Now this sounds like a lot ... but it takes about 15-20 minutes.

I combined the above with a small side salad.

Rough estimate is under 500 calories. The veggies are very low in calories, so it is just the wrap (100), some oil, tomatoes and tofu.

  8. Jeff, this sounds delicious. I haven't checked out the green pea gauc, but that sounds yummy, too. Sound I call you Emeril?
